Women Who Run Hollywood - Screening Review

I'm pist! Okay, let me not come off so strong...I'm upset. This screening has certainly put the frustration from the injustice on women within the entertainment industry back into my heart. On this past Tuesday, August 14, I had the opportunity to attend the exclusive screening of "The Women Who Run Hollywood" it was made by two French female film makers. Produced by Wichita Films, this documentary showed me just how drastic the credit for women in the industry is lacked! They're is an entire 20 years of female filmmakers whipped away from our history. What happened? What was the cause? Why did this happen? I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with directors and sisters, Clara Kuperberg and Julia Kuperberg while they were visiting in LA.
Let me tell you about my fascination with Clara Kuperberg and Julia Kuperberg. These women have produced over 40 + films, they work on 3 films at once in a year! Their work ethic is absolutely admirable and motivating! Each of their pieces are done from passion and care. They are all used to bring awareness, teach and motivate change! These women are serving a definite purpose!
"The Women Who Run Hollywood" was created in 2014 and aired 2016, another reason why I'm pist, I'm just learning about this movie! The women spoke about how when they first went to request a budget for this movie how many men we saying that they were liars and how it wasn't true. What I felt the movie missed was the African American piece. Being an advocate for my melanin sisters, I would have loved to see a glimpse of how we contributed to history in film for women. But we get into that during my Q & A. And after speaking to the women, I understand that this film was for ALL women!
Q & A with the sisters:
Nia: How angry did this movie make you guys? What shocked you the most?
CA & JK:The women being erased from history. There's not even anything about them in the books. They created the first of everything. The first sound effects, etc. They were the first to do it, and men just took the credit. That's why we were pist off. To have been in the business 20 years and just whip them out. Now since this documentary has been created, their has been classes created about women in film; the history and just how important they are.
Nia: Speak more about, Lois Weber and her contribution?
CA & JK: She was the first lesbian to come out as a film maker. In a world where they didn't want to even see women dressing like men or acting like men. She was a hero!
Nia: What part did you leave out?
CA & JK: People of color. Due to segregation they were not allowing them to work in the movies. However, there was a cinema done by two black female directors. There is proof of that. This was in the 1920s.
During that time, white people were painting their faces, to play black characters. So we thought it was fascinating.
We are working on a docu right now about people of color and their contribution to film.
Nia: What's something that's still missing in the film industry in regards to women?
CA & JK: As it is a men's world, we are surviving in this world. So we don't support each other, which is a big mistake! The beginning of the century, it was Queens who ruled the world, because women supported each other! Women have to hire more women. The highest positions are taken from men. It's not that we don't want to support each other, we're just trying to survive in this world. Now, I think the mission should be to support each other and create. Create a woman's world. All types of women, African American, Asian, Spanish, etc. we need to fight together. If we align all our forces together, and not just women against men, it has to be all the women!
As you can see, this documentary is a must see. It's really pushed me to learn more and assure that Ladies in the Industry is providing more opportunities for women in the film industry.
